Secure Payment and Escrow for Classic-Car Transactions
November 2, 2026

This guide is educational information, not legal, financial, or insurance advice. Verify current local rules and transaction requirements with qualified professionals.
Choose the process before the deal
Agree in writing on the price, deposit, inspection period, payment method, delivery conditions, and when title and possession transfer.
Verify escrow providers independently
If using escrow, research the provider using independent sources, confirm licensing or regulatory status where applicable, and call a verified number. Fake escrow sites are a common fraud pattern. Never rely only on a link supplied by the other party.
Beware of payment impersonation
Fraudsters may send lookalike email addresses or altered wire instructions. Confirm any changes using a phone number you obtained independently before sending money.
Understand payment finality
Payment methods vary in settlement time and reversal risk. Ask your bank what confirmation is required before releasing a title or vehicle. Do not rely on screenshots or notifications alone.
Document release
Use a signed bill of sale, record the VIN and condition, and retain receipts for payment, title transfer, and shipping. Do not hand over the vehicle until the agreed verified conditions are met.

Why this matters
Verify an escrow provider independently using a trusted contact method; fraudulent escrow websites are common. Wire transfers can be difficult to reverse. Do not release the car based on a screenshot of a transfer.
Documentation and independent verification
Ask for clear photographs, original records and a consistent vehicle history. Independently verify material claims before committing funds; do not rely solely on screenshots, badges or seller descriptions.
Questions to ask before traveling
Confirm the vehicle is physically available, who holds title, whether any liens exist, whether the seller can provide a live walkaround and whether a third-party inspection is permitted. Treat evasive answers as a reason to slow down.
Costs beyond the purchase price
Include tax and registration where applicable, insurance, transport, storage, routine maintenance, parts availability and a contingency reserve. A low purchase price can conceal a high total cost of ownership.
What to do next
Make a written shortlist of the most important specifications, gather comparable completed sales and arrange an independent inspection. Keep a dated record of communications and documents.
